on Alexander Romance

Alexander Romance

Historical romance of Alexander, a blending of fact and fiction as history, started by Alexander himself. The Greek historians who followed his campaign through Asia, selectively recorded and glorified the account of his conquest with a flattering and forgiving pen that only wrote what could have been approved by Alexander, who was not so forgiving to those who did not flatter him.

In time, history, legend and myth intertwined in the fable of Alexander Romance. The book initially titled The Life of Alexander was most likely written by an unknown Egyptian author in the Library of the Graeco-Egyptian city of Alexandria and was reproduced in various languages and versions over the centuries. It was a historical myth, indifferent to historical facts and timelines, primarily written to glorify Alexander who was worshipped as a god in Ptolemic Alexandria, and to lessen the harsh realities of Egyptian slavery under the Macedonian rule.

Thus, Alexander first became the son of the last Pharaoh of Egypt, a pious Christian conqueror during the crusading Middle Ages, the sanctified  Dhu'l-Qarnain, "The Two-Horned", in the Holy Qur'ân, the perfect western imperialist and world unifier of colonizing Europe, the modern hero of homosexuality, and back to being a soldier.

In ancient Persian literature, two giants of Persian poetry in the Middle Ages,
Ferdowsi and Nezami, wrote about Alexander [Eskandar] in verse, in Shâh Nâmeh and Eskandar Nâmeh. To reconcile the Islamic view of Alexander with the historical figure, by their times Alexander had become the elder brother of the last Great King, who avenged his murder and married his daughter, Roxana; thus transforming Alexander into a Persian Prince and a legitimate heir to the Persian throne.

   And so romance rewrote history...
